What to Wear on Your Winter Walks

No such thing as bad weather just inappropriate clothing

There is no such thing as bad weather only inappropriate clothing is so true! So what should you wear on your winter walks?

In winter the two buzz words are Layers and Be Prepared. Even if the weather forecast looks good it can change quickly at this time of year!

So bring your backpack and pop your waterproofs in there (including your waterproof trousers) as well as a hat and some gloves. Or if its a cold start still take your backpack as it’s useful to pop your clothes in as you take of the layers.

So let’s look at what you need.

Baselayers: A good base layer will be breathable and dry quickly – fabrics that don’t dry easily will keep you wet and cold so avoid cotton and choose wool or synthetic materials such as polyester or polypropylene.

Mid Layer (Gilet or Fleece): Add a fleece again not cotton or one of those lightweight down jackets or gillets.

Waterproof: A good lightweight waterproof jacket will keep you dry from the elements, have a look at our range of Nordic Walking clothing here. Or alternatively pop into your local Cotswold outdoors or Rohan store who are happy to help provide advice on the best clothing for you, and best of all you can also use your Nordic Walking discount card for 10% off.

Shoes: If your walking shoes haven’t been subject to much rain recently, now may be the time to check their waterproofing. If they are no good, invest in a new pair or revamp the old with a waterproofing spray – cold and wet feet are not funny and apart from being uncomfortable can lead to blistering and in severe conditions – frostbite. A good pair of Goretex paired with proper walking socks will make sure you are still enjoying your walking safely in all weathers – head over to our shop to see the range we offer or again visit your local outdoor shop for advice with fitting. If waterproof shoes are not in your price range why not try Sealskinz waterproof socks instead!

Hat/Buff: You loose most heat from your head so make sure you wear something on your head. Or sometimes a buff is a great choice as you can pop it over your ears if the wind gets cold.

Gloves: Don’t forget gloves. I love the Sealskinz water-repellent ones but you can also get some great ones that attach to the poles
